About

The fourth Pokémon generation began with Diamond and Pearl on Nintendo DS in Japan in 2006. Its 107 new species occupy National Pokédex numbers 387–493, from Turtwig to Arceus. Chimchar and Piplup complete the starter trio. Sinnoh’s regional Pokédex follows the selection of each game rather than this historical range.

Sinnoh’s mountains and myths

Mount Coronet divides a region of lakes, forests, snow and cities. Team Galactic’s ambitions involve Dialga and Palkia, Legendary Pokémon associated with time and space. Local myths become part of the journey through the Gyms and toward becoming Champion.

Platinum is the enhanced Generation IV edition. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are later remakes; Legends: Arceus explores the region’s past as Hisui with a different approach to exploration.

The Pokétch, the Underground and a battle change

The Pokétch offers watch-style applications, including a calculator and tracking tools. The DS touch screen also supports menus and activities. In the Underground, players dig for fossils and treasures, create Secret Bases and, in the original games, connect locally with others.

Generation IV made the physical or special category depend on the individual move instead of its elemental type. Moves of the same type can therefore use different attacking stats, widening the possibilities for Pokémon such as Garchomp, Lucario and Weavile.

Species debuts versus regional entries

Numbers 387–493 identify Generation IV species. Diamond, Pearl and Platinum do not necessarily share the same regional selection, and later remakes do not change when a species debuted.

Frequently asked questions

Which games belong to Generation IV?

Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, along with the Johto remakes HeartGold and SoulSilver.

Why did some moves gain different uses?

The physical/special split let individual moves use different stats even when they share a type.

Official game information

How to read the stats and numbering

The six base stats describe the default form, using PokéAPI data. Values can differ in the original games or earlier versions. A generation records when a species debuted; a regional Pokédex can combine species from several generations.
