About

The eighth Pokémon generation began with Sword and Shield for Nintendo Switch in 2019. Its 96 new species run from Grookey to Enamorus, National Pokédex numbers 810–905. Scorbunny and Sobble join Grookey as the starters. The range covers species introduced across this era’s associated releases, rather than only Galar’s regional Pokédex.

Galar combines stadiums and open countryside

British-inspired landscapes surround a Gym Challenge staged as a public sporting event, with uniforms, stadiums and spectators. The Wild Area offers broad spaces where location and weather affect encounters, alongside Pokémon visible in the environment.

The two versions differ in exclusive Pokémon and some characters. Their Expansion Pass adds the Isle of Armor and the Crown Tundra. Released in the same generation, Legends: Arceus visits historical Hisui and changes the structure of exploration and Pokémon research.

Dynamax and Gigantamax

Dynamax makes a Pokémon huge for three turns. In Galar’s games, it is available in designated locations and once per battle. Moves become Max Moves with additional effects, making timing a tactical choice. Certain Pokémon can Gigantamax, changing appearance as well as size and gaining a species-specific G-Max Move.

Max Raid Battles let up to four Trainers challenge a wild Dynamax Pokémon; only one participant can Dynamax during the raid. Wooloo, Corviknight, Toxtricity, Zacian and Zamazenta are recognizable members of the new roster. Galarian Ponyta and Weezing remain regional forms of older species.

Why the range extends beyond Galar

Numbers 810–905 include Generation VIII debuts such as Wyrdeer and Kleavor from Hisui. Older Pokémon returning in an expansion do not become newly introduced species.

Frequently asked questions

Are Dynamax and Gigantamax identical?

Gigantamax is a special transformation available to certain Pokémon, with a different appearance and G-Max Move.

Is the Wild Area the whole game world?

No. It is a large explorable zone within Galar, rather than every city and route joined into one open area.

How to read the stats and numbering

The six base stats describe the default form, using PokéAPI data. Values can differ in the original games or earlier versions. A generation records when a species debuted; a regional Pokédex can combine species from several generations.
