How to read this coordinate result

The route returns results, a list containing latitude, longitude, and elevation. This page uses one coordinate pair, so the list will usually contain one result. elevation is returned in metres and describes the service’s approximate elevation for that point; it does not confirm an address, a building floor, or an object’s height.

  • Read latitude and longitude with elevation so the value stays tied to the queried place.
  • Treat results as a list even when it contains one item.
  • Use metres as the unit displayed by this route’s response.

Coordinates define the queried point

The locations parameter takes latitude and longitude in decimal degrees. Small changes in position can produce a different value, especially on sloping ground or near a change in terrain. Before comparing points, check that the coordinates represent the same place and use the same format.

  • A negative latitude marks a position south of the Equator.
  • A negative longitude marks a position west of Greenwich.
  • Do not replace coordinates with a city name before obtaining an appropriate geographic point.

Useful geographic context, with clear limits

Open-Elevation presents itself as a free, open-source elevation API. The response is useful for enriching a map, testing an interface, or adding context to a geographic point. It does not replace a topographic survey, property boundary work, route calculation, construction decision, or safety guidance in a risk area.

  • Keep the queried coordinate with the result in any comparison.
  • Use a suitable source and method when centimetres or professional responsibility matter.
  • Confirm local conditions separately before outdoor activity or travel.
