The record identifies the available work; a title alone is not always enough

Gutendex search returns count, next, previous, and a results list. A result can include id, title, authors, languages, copyright, media_type, formats, and download_count. Use id to return to the same Project Gutenberg record, especially when similar titles, different editions, or more than one translation appear. languages and formats show what that record offers: a book may have HTML, plain text, or EPUB, but available formats vary. Before downloading or citing an edition, open the record and confirm the author, language, translation, and chosen file.

  • Compare id, title, authors, and languages before choosing between similar results.
  • Pick a file from formats for the way you plan to read; one available format does not guarantee the others.
  • Use next and previous to continue a long search without assuming the first page contains every match.

Downloads do not measure quality; rights depend on location

download_count records how often the item was downloaded and can help sort results, but it is not a review, recommendation, or literary assessment. When copyright is false, Gutendex reports public-domain status in the United States; that does not replace checking the rules where the work will be used.

  • Use download_count only as a demand signal, not a verdict on the work.
