Fields worth checking

  • Development & Data
  • GitHub Repository Search results
  • public source

A query finds candidates, not a finished choice

Search returns total_count, items, and fields such as full_name, description, owner, html_url, language, and public metrics. Use filters such as language: and topic: to narrow a list, then open a repository to read its README, licence, and instructions. A name, description, or star count is not enough to decide whether a project fits your case.

  • Keep full_name or html_url to return to the same project.
  • Combine language and topic filters instead of loose terms.
  • Read repository documentation before installing or integrating code.

Public metrics need context and verification

Stars, forks, language, and description are discovery signals and can change. They do not prove maintenance, security, compatibility, or permission to use. Check recent activity, licence, security notices, and dependencies on the project page before using code in production.

  • Do not treat popularity as a security audit.
  • Check the licence for the intended use.
  • Record when a comparison was made because results change.
